How to apply

If you are studying at a UK university we require a good 1st class honours degree. A typical offer would be for a 1st; but we may ask for 1st with 75% in the final year and 75% in the final individual project.

If you are studying overseas we look for an undergraduate degree passed at an equivalent grade to a UK 1st class honours degree. The guidance on international qualifications provides information on Imperial College's minimum entry requirements and on what grade is considered to be equivalent to an Upper Second class (2.1) UK degree.  We would be looking for a  higher grade than those given.

You will also need to meet Imperial College's Higher English language requirement. You do not need to have met the English language requirement when you make your application.

China

• If you are studying in China at a Chinese university we can only consider applicants from Key or Project 211 universities with a final overall mark of 87.5% or better. 
• If you are a Chinese applicant studying on a 2+2 China+UK programme where you are graded in the Chinese system for the first two years of study we require a minimum of 87.5% from China, alongside predicted 1st class marks from the UK university.   A typical offer would be for a 1st with 75% in the final year and 75% in the final individual project from your UK university.

Application Deadlines

Submitting your application

When you submit your application please:

• Include a convincing personal statement (1-2 pages) as a separate self-contained document. This should describe your academic background, your interest in the area of the MSc, any relevant projects, any relevant work experience, and your future career plans.  The personal statement is a very important part of the selection process as it helps us assess your interest in the subject.  We want to hear why you are interested in the course and details of any skills, interests and attributes that you think you have that demonstrate for aptitude, motivation and interest in the course.
• Include a CV-resume
• Include transcripts of study, which you normally request from your university.  These should include all modules you have studied and the marks awarded.  If you are still studying for your undergraduate degree please also provide a list of modules you are taking in your final year.  If your transcript is not in English please include a translated copy.
• Make sure you give your referee's university or company email address and not their personal one.  

There is an application fee.

ATAS is not required for the MSc courses.

Re-applicants

If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved by additional education, research and/or relevant work experience.

The selection committee make their decision using the information provided in the application and the references. They make their decision based on academic performance so far, academic potential, references and your personal statement.

Once the selection committee have made their decision they return the application to the department's admissions team. We check the decision and send it to the Registry admissions team. The Registry team make a final check and process the decision. Once this is done you will be able to check the decision on the appication portal. 

If you have applied for two courses your application is processed sequentially.  It will be sent to your first choice.  If they are unable to offer you a place it will be sent to the second choice. 

Our admissions rounds have fixed application and decision dates throughout the year.

Apply by 23:59 (UK time) on the closing date of an application round and you will recieve a response on your application by the relevant decision date. We do not normally make decisions until the closing date of a round.

We recommend applying as early as you can - we cannot guarantee that places will be available, or course remain open, in later rounds.
